Web site is one scary place to be

Today, as part of the ongoing effort by all of us - well, all of me - here at Valley 101, to educate newcomers and enlighten long-time residents, we are going to discuss how to determine if your house has been constructed over a secret portal to hell.

We shall also discuss karst. These are today's topics because, in the course of my unending efforts to find new ways to goof off at work, I have come across a swell Web site, a Web site that is at least as swell as the fling-the-cow page and much more swell than the anagram crossword Web site, which makes my brain hurt.

It's the Arizona Geological Survey site, http://www.azgs.state.az.us . You should check it out.

There are many, many features to this site. They have maps for sale. For just two of your American dollars, you can get a "map of known metallic mineral occurrences (excluding base and precious metals) in Arizona, by Stanton B. Keith, 1969, scale 1:1,000,000."

Heck of a deal. Sure, it was done in 1969, but you have to figure our mineral occurrences haven't moved around all that much since then.

For $8.95, you can order A Home Buyer's Guide to Geologic Hazards in Arizona, although I bet that's something you wish you had picked up a while ago before the secret portal to hell opened up in your family room and that sulfur smell started leaking out.

The best part of the menu: Geologic Hazards - floods, radon, arsenic, earthquakes, problem soils, abandoned mines, landslides and, of course, karst.

This is an extremely scary site. Did you know that the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program rates Arizona as "high risk" for earthquakes? It is their second-highest risk category. Sleep tight.

Anyway, about karst, our word for the day: Karst terrain, according to the AGS has a lot of caves, sinkholes, depressions and so forth. These would not be prime building sites.

As for the secret portals to hell, I am sorry, but I made that part up. Still, you never know.
